Why do they call the grapefruit-and-bacon diet the mayo
clinic diet? The Mayo Clinic is pretty clear about what they
think of this diet. The Mayo Clinic website says "don't believe any
of these diets.
They did not originate at Mayo Clinic and are not approved
by Mayo Clinic."
But people keep on looking for a magic diet that will
help them lose weight fast. And any very-low-calorie diet will cause weight
loss. If you eat nothing but citrus fruit and eggs, with a few pieces
of bacon thrown in, you will be eating far fewer calories than usual,
and may drop as much as 5 to ten pounds in a week or so. From personal
experience I can tell you that your appetite will plummet as well, because
of all the nausea.
Your webmaster was 14 when she and her father went on
this diet many, many years ago. We lost weight. We gained it back
When you read through the list of items that are allowed
on this diet, one thing stands out - there is no sugar, no white flour,
and no starchy vegetables. In fact, except for the small amount of carbohydrates
in the grapefruit and salad, this really is a low-carb, high-protein and
high-fat diet.
Was this the forerunner of the famous Atkins diet that so
many people swear by (but so few people actually follow?)
Here's a list of things "allowed" on
the mayo clinic diet:
BREAKFAST:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
2 Eggs any style
2 Slices of bacon
Black coffee or tea, no sugar
LUNCH:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, not low fat or fat free)
Meat (Cooked any way)
DINNER:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Meat (cooked any way) Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter
or Seasoning or a salad as above) Black coffee or tea, no sugar
BEDTIME:
(opt) 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk
Is the mayo clinic diet safe?
Now, I approve highly of removing sugar and white flour
from your diet. In fact, the World Health Organization believes that these
foods are largely responsible for the world's obesity epidemic. But no-sugar
does not have to be low-carb. The insistence on the additional fat, in
bacon, butter, and salad dressing, makes this a very close relative to
the low-carb diet. Is the original author of this diet kicking himself
(or herself) for not taking responsibility for the diet, so she could
have received the millions of dollars that eventually went to Atkins,
et al?
Whether or not this diet is safe may depend on how much
salad and veggies are included. If the salad and veggie portions are huge,
and the meat and bacon portions are small, your body may not go into ketosis.
Ketosis is caused, according to Covert Bailey, by the
incomplete burning of fat. In his words "You're not burning lots
of fat, you're burning a little fat incompletely." It is the excess
protein, and the incomplete burning of fat instead of the efficient and
necessary combination of fats and carbohydrates, that has many experts
worried about the safety of low-carb diets.
Why does it matter if you can lose a little weight, and
do it fast? Maybe it won't matter, if you start out with a healthy heart
and kidneys, and you don't stay on the diet for longer than a few days.
However, there are now class-action lawsuits being filed against the authors
of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets because many people have experienced
severe health problems because of this weight loss plan. Hundreds of doctors,
medical associations and research institutes have voiced their concern
about the possible dangers.
Of course, the grapefruit diet, or mayo clinic diet, is
not the same as the Atkins diet. But it is close enough to cause deep
concern.
What would be a better alternative? In my opinion, it just
makes sense to follow a healthy weight loss program that has been proven
through independent scientific research to help people lose weight and
improve their health. And the only diets that have that kind of scientific
backing are mostly plant-based diets. Find a book by Nathan Pritikin,
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, or Dr. Dean Ornish,
and move to a permanent solution to your weight problem. It just makes
more sense than to go on the grapefruit diet one more time.
