Health Insurance - Pre-Paid Health Care
We often think of health insurance as a benefit that is designed to keep us healthy, and to provide financial support in case we become ill or need medical treatment. When we think of health insurance this way, we can be surprised when we discover that something isn’t covered, even though it’s important for your health.
It is more useful to think of your policy as a pre-paid health care plan. A representative from the insurance company and someone from the company that you work for sat down over lists and graphs in order to decide what your policy would cover, and how much the monthly premium would cost.
Each time a benefit for a medical service is added to the policy, the premium cost goes up. If the policy is too restrictive, your employer may lose employees to other companies that offer better health care benefits. If the policy is too lenient, and offers too many benefits, the company cannot afford the premiums.
The cost of a policy is based on statistical models that give the insurance company a good idea of how much they can expect to pay out in claims in any given year, for a specific number of people, and for a specific package of health care benefits. The premiums that are collected from the group must be more than the amount of money paid out in claims and administrative costs, or the insurance company loses money. Insurance companies are also required by law to maintain enough money in reserve to cover any potential future claims.
Because so much is riding on these calculations, very few exceptions to the contracts are ever made. Your insurance company isn’t being cold-hearted when they turn down a request for a benefit that isn’t in your policy – although it certainly feels that way if you need a medical procedure that isn’t covered.
To see why exceptions are rare, think of a pre-paid tour that is purchased from a travel agent – if you negotiate a package that includes transportation and hotels, but does not include meals, it would not be wise to leave home without enough money to pay for your dinner.
Even if you’re hungry when you get to Paris, your travel agent or tour guide is unlikely to pay for your meals. They were not included in your contract, and for that reason your fees don’t cover them. Your health insurance policy works exactly the same way. It will pay for only those services that are included in the contract, and both the premiums and the benefits are negotiated in advance.
If you are self-employed and purchase an individual policy, you were
probably offered a choice of standard plans from which to choose. In this
case, the “group” includes the number of other people who
have purchased an individual policy from the insurance company. Your premiums
pay for the specific benefits outlined in the contract. It is very important
for you to carefully read through your contract so you know exactly what
you’re paying for.
