I answer questions from people like you all day long – it’s my job at a large health insurance company. I can vouch for the fact that insurance company employees make mistakes, because I’ve made mistakes myself. That means that the first answer you get may not be correct.
In fact, it isn’t unreasonable to expect mistakes, for a simple reason – while you have only one benefit booklet to read and understand, the Customer Service and Claims employees at a large health insurance company have to understand the benefits of hundreds of different policies. They do their best to give you the correct information, but they’re only human.
You should take it upon yourself to become an expert on your policy.
Read your benefit booklet or contract. If you receive updates or letters
from the insurance company, make sure that you understand any changes
that have been made to your policy, and how they will affect you. It will
help you approach your insurance company with much more confidence, if
you understand your policy before you call them.
