Understanding Your Insurance

In the United States, almost all health insurance is provided by private insurance companies. The policies are usually purchased through employers or unions although some people purchase individual policies. America’s system is unique – no other industrialized nation ties health coverage to employment the way it is done in the US.

This system creates unique problems because every policy is written differently. Your health insurance coverage will change every time you change employers. It will also change every time your employer goes shopping for a less expensive policy. And the insurance company might change your benefits at any time.

Every time your coverage changes you have a different set of benefits (and exclusions). It is highly likely that your insurance policy is different from your neighbor’s policy. People in the same family even have different benefits, if they work for different companies.

It isn’t always easy to stay informed, but if you understand how insurance works it will help you get the most from your coverage.

I strongly recommend that you read your benefit booklet thoroughly before ever contacting your insurance company to discuss gastric bypass surgery. Your knowledge will help you ask the right questions - and understand the answers. It will also tell you what your rights are if you don’t like the answers you receive.

Reading your benefit booklet will also help you recognize any errors made by the people you talk to at your insurance company.
