Do your friends helping you lose weight?

Are your friends supporting your weight loss goals as much as they think they are?

A number of years ago I attended a lecture by a gentleman who claimed to be a Lakota Sioux medicine-man-in-training. He looked Irish to me, but he gave a great talk about a subject that instantly connected with everyone in the audience.

The title of his talk was "psychological vampires".

What the heck is that? Sounds scary, doesn't it?

Well, once you start thinking about it, you'll know exactly what he meant. Do you know people who seem to feed on other people's anxiety or anger? People who "try to be supportive" but always leave you feeling discouraged? People who say critical or unkind things, and then excuse it by saying they're "just being honest"? (Isn't it amazing that some peoples' honesty always seems to hurt?)

Other folks seem intensely interested in your life - but encourage you to remember only the sad things that happened in your past - things you might never think about without their "help". Or perhaps you get excited about a project or plan, tell your friend, and get no response at all - as though the idea is so pointless it doesn't even deserve comment. Devastating, isn't it?

Or your friend may only be interested in those ideas or plans that specifically impact her, or which mirror her own needs and desires.

All these folks tend to leave you feeling worn out, less enthusiastic, less creative - and sometimes completely frazzled.

Relatives are famous for some of these traits because they have more access to our history. But anyone can be less than supportive. In fact, I've been guilty of most of these sins myself, at one time or another.

Most of us have, if we look at ourselves honestly.

Now, realistically, we have to admit that there are days when we feel picked on when we hear someone say "good morning"! (I'm not going to mention that time of the month, ladies, but you know what I'm talking about.) We shouldn't jump to the conclusion that our friend is being unsupportive if there's a possibility that it's our own mood that's really at fault.

And it's also not fair to believe that other people will be supportive of us if we talk repetitively about our goals and dreams, but never take any noticeable step towards achieving any of them. If you're just saying the same thing over and over again, without taking action, people get bored with you. You should expect it.

However, if you've made a solid, realistic decision to lose weight; if you've taken the trouble to choose a program that fits your medical condition and your lifestyle; if you've created a specific goal and a step-by-step plan for following through with your program and checking your progress - then you should be extremely protective of that plan.

Remember that you have a right to reject unfair or critical remarks that undermine your commitment to your health.

You can't avoid being influenced by the words and actions of other people. But you can choose to share your goals and dreams with people who are able to recognize your enthusiasm, and support it.

Begin to pay attention to how you feel after you leave a conversation. Do you feel energized? Is your mind churning with ideas? Do you feel safe and nurtured? Then share your weight loss goals with this person. It will help you achieve your dreams.

On the other hand, do you feel frustrated? Confused? Let down? If so, you would be wise to keep your goals and dreams to yourself. Protect your hopes and desires as though they were precious - because they are!

Finding support for your weight loss goals will really help you achieve success. But only if you choose your support group wisely.
