The "Research" that Made Us Think Ephedra Was Safe
Note - this article was written before the government ban on Ephedra.
Recently, there was a front-page article in the New York Times about the false and misleading "research" that is done to support sales pitches for weight loss products, like ones that use ephedra. It looks like judges are starting to crack down on companies that say in their advertisements that research has found a substance to be effective, when in fact there is no such proof.
They also report on scientists who change their data just to please the companies that pay for their work, often slanting research results to fit a pre-intended purpose. I couldn't find a free copy of the article online, but it's worth reading if you can find the paper. The moral of the story - be very wary of any 'scientific studies' that seem to support diet products. Do your homework.
I find the whole ephedra controversy somewhat confusing, myself. Ephedra (sometimes called ephedrine or Ma Huang) is one of the main ingredients in the street drug methamphetamine, which has sent so many people to the morgue. "Speed" can affect your heart rate and blood pressure, cause mild or disturbing personality changes, can affect your sleep patterns, can cause paranoia and other psychotic symptoms, and when used over a long period of time can lead to deep, clinical depression. And yes, it might help you lose weight, too, for a while.
It's just speed in another form (a so-called 'natural' form, of course), and after so many people became unintentional addicts of "diet pills" in the 60's and 70's, you'd think we'd learn. Sigh...

I can now immediately tell if I have consumed something I should not have."
