Depression, Obesity and Gastric Bypass Surgery
Depression is common among
obese women.
Although men are also affected by depression, doctors who counsel patients
preparing for
gastric
bypass surgery find that many more women are affected
by depression than men.
There is no clear cause of this difference between obese
men and women, although it is believed that social pressures to be thin
plays a bigger role in the life of women. Overweight women also have a
higher incidence of sexual abuse in their past than thinner women, (25%
as opposed to 6% of thinner women, according to Mary P. McGowan, MD.,
authour of Gastric
Bypass Surgery.)
In addition, studies have shown that people with bing
eating disorder (BED) tend to be depressed more often than other obese
patients,
If you are considering gastric bypass surgery, and you
have a history of depression, you may be given a psychological evaluation.
If you are presently suffering from major depression, your doctors will
want you to seek treatment before the surgery is performed. This will
help assure a more positive outcome from the surgery, which is naturally
very stressful.
