Popular Diets and Weight Loss Fads - Do They Work?
Do fad diets work? That depends on what we mean by
the word "work," doesn't it?
There are thousands of popular diet books on the market,
and millions of people around the world trying hard to lose weight.
Some of the most popular fad diets have been circulating for years -
your webmaster went on the "Mayo Clinic" diet back in high school
- and believe me - that was a very long time ago.
If you eat fewer calories than you burn off in your daily life you will
lose weight. There's no rocket science here. It doesn't matter where the
calories come from if weight loss is your only goal.
When health is also an issue, then there are many other things to think
about besides calories. Does the diet give you the nutrition you need
without expensive supplements or brand name foods? Does it help reduce
the chances of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancers? Will
it help you live longer, reduce mood swings and make you look better?
Some diets can do all these things. Unfortunately, most popular diets
don't.
