I
have a confession to make - This week I hid my TV in the closet. Why?
Because for several years I've been avoiding the TV completely - but at
the start of the Iraqi conflict I got hooked on the news. Then I started
watching those re-runs that come after the news. Pretty soon I was watching
American Idol every night.
So what? Well, I started gaining weight,
that's what. So my TV is back in the closet until I get over this need
to check in on the daily lives of imaginary people.
Speaking of the connection between gaining
weight and watching TV, I just found a very interesting tidbit on the
website of the National Institute on Media and the Family: "Television
viewing lowers metabolism. The metabolism rate while watching
TV is actually lower than a resting metabolism rate."
Their article on the causes of obesity and diabetes in
children, and the media connection, is something everyone should read.
